The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is the top professional body in the UK that is concerned with taxation alone. Established in 1930, the CIOT received a Royal Charter in 1994 and now has 15,000 members who use the title “Chartered Tax Adviser”. The Chartered Institute of Taxation offers the CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser) qualification enabling candidates to give advice on matters of direct and indirect taxation.

CIOT Course Structure
The CIOT CTA course structure is modular in format and is completed at four stages:
Entry level
• Ethics
• Law
Awareness Level – Choose three subjects
• Corporation Tax
• Taxation of Individuals
• Taxation of Owner Managed Businesses (OMB)
• IHT, Trusts and Estates
• VAT
Advisory Level – Choose Two
• Taxation of Individuals
• Taxation of Owner Managed Businesses (OMB)
• Advanced Corporation Tax
• IHT, Trusts and Estates
Application & Interaction Level – Choose One
• Taxation of Companies
• Taxation of Individuals, Trusts and Estates
• Taxation of Owner Managed Businesses (OMG)
CIOT Course Requirements
There are several professional bodies from which qualifications can provide direct access to the CIOT Chartered Tax Adviser course and include the successful completion of following qualifications:
• The Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT)
• The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
• The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
• The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)
• The Institute of Indirect Taxation (IIT)
There are various other examinations taken within the Inland Revenue and HMRC that can provide direct entry to the Chartered Institute of Taxation courses.
CIOT Exams
The entry level stage is assessed by a one hour e-assessment where candidates must get 40 questions correct out of 60. The Awareness Level stage involves a 3 hour long exam comprising of 12 short-form questions with a pass mark of 50%. The Advisory stage is also assessed by a 3 hour exam with a 50% pass mark required. The final stage (Application & Interaction) involves a 3 hour long exam based on a specific case study and requires a 50% pass mark.
